The Scottish EDGE Fund

The Scottish EDGE is a funding competition aimed at identifying Scotland’s top young, early stage and high growth potential entrepreneurs. Historically the Scottish EDGE was run by Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise alongside various partners. However, in August 2014 Sir Tom Hunter and RBS agreed to extend the success of the fund and lead in its delivery going forward.

In essence the Scottish EDGE is a £5m+ fund endowed by serial entrepreneur Sir Tom Hunter, the Royal Bank of Scotland PLC and the Scottish Government. The competition itself consists of three categories: Scottish EDGE, Young EDGE and Wild Card EDGE. Depending on their eligibility for these categories, companies can potentially win an award of up to £100,000.

Key Facts

Over the first four rounds, the EDGE Fund awarded £2.56m to 69 entrepreneurial businesses judged on their growth potential.  These businesses went on to create over 200 new jobs in growing firms, generated an additional £8.5m turnover and secured external financing of over £4.3m.  All winners had engaged with Business Gateway and/or the enterprise agencies.

The fifth round was held in December 2014 and awarded a total of £777,000 to 16 businesses.  Two of the winners won the maximum award of £100,000 (Lobster Pod and West Coast Fisheries and Butchers).  In the Young EDGE category, first introduced in the fourth round, £75,000 was shared amongst 10 winners aged 18-30.
